If you live in a place that doesn’t get much snow, investing in snow tires might not be the best thing to do. However, there might be instances when you’ll need to drive through snowy roads. So how can you make the most of this situation without spending hundreds of dollars on snow tires that you’ll probably never use again?

Once you find yourself needing to drive through snow, there’s no reason to panic because you can instantly make snow tires using zip ties. This is a hack that most drivers can vouch for, which you can easily do yourself.

All that you would need are the following:

  • 6 zip ties that are 36 inches long
  • 24 zip ties that are 12 inches long
  • 6 inches snow
  • Scissors

Before starting this DIY project, ensure that you check how many openings your rims have. This might vary from rim to rim, so it’s best to check before starting because your “snow chain” would have to go through each of the openings on your rims.

Once you’re ready to start, simply follow these step-by-step directions:

  1. You should start by tying one small zip tie to the long zip tie around 6 to 8 inches away from the head. Be sure to tighten the small zip tie as hard as possible without damaging it. Then simply add a second small zip tie an inch away from the first small zip tie. Be sure to continue with this pattern until you’ve finished with six small zip ties attached to your chain.
  2. Grab a pair of scissors, then trim the small zip ties around ¼ of an inch because you wouldn’t want any excess zip ties to be stuck, as this can make your driving experience unnatural and uncomfortable.
  3. Simply repeat these first two steps to complete the snow chains you need.
  4. Once you’ve finished creating all the chains, it’s now time to attach them to your tires.
  5. After attaching them to your tires, ensure that the zip ties are connected and tightened. Be sure to tighten them as best as possible while preventing them from breaking.

This is a relatively straightforward process, and this can make your lives so much easier.

Repeat these steps depending on how many tires you’ll need to DIY, and you’re now ready to conquer the snowy road ahead. It’s as simple as that!
